Ukrainian women take their holidays very seriously and coming up in the later part of this month is Tatiana Day or also known as Students Day. In this article we will discuss what is Tatiana Day and why is it important to the Ukrainian people.
What Is Tatiana Day?
Tatiana Day, also known as Students Day, was named after Saint Tatiana. Saint Tatiana was a Christian martyr in 3rd-century Rome during the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus. Tatiana was raised in a Christian family and devoted her entire life to serving God. It is said Tatiana was tortured horribly daily but by the next morning her wounds would be gone, and the people who tortured her were cruelly punished by unseen forces.
Tatiana was executed with her father on January 12th in the year 226. After her death, many doubters gained faith because of the miracles that surrounded her in life and the miracles that occurred after her death. Tatiana was eventually pronounced a saint after her death which led to January 24th being Tatian Day. In 1791 she was announced as the patron saint of all students and educators after Moscow University sanctified their chapel in the name of Saint Tatiana.
The Importance And The Traditions.
Tatiana Day is important to the Ukrainian people in many different ways. Tatiana Day coincides with the end of the first term of the traditional academic year for Russian and Ukrainian students, so students usually use this holiday to celebrate the completion of final exams. On this day students also remember their best, brightest, and most carefree years. Since 2005, the day of January 25 in Russia and Ukraine has been officially celebrated as the “Day of Russian and Ukrainian students.”
On this day it is believed that you can’t refuse anyone’s request, especially if it is food. There is no cursing or swearing for the whole day, and absolutely no housework. All the cleaning and picking up in homes should be done the day before. There is also signs for the weather on Tatiana Day. Heavy snow means it will frost until the end of winter and a lot of rainy summers. A warm snowstorm means that there will be a huge drought and a major crop failure. If there are clear skies and frost that means that spring will be early and harvest will be great.
Also, on this day girls and women named Tatiana as well as students ask God for the fulfillment of their cherished desires. Traditionally women who wanted to get married made brooms on this day and hid them in the houses of the men with whom they wanted to marry. The women had to do this without getting caught, because if their future mother-in-law found the broom then her fate with the gentleman would not work out.
Tatiana Day is mainly important for students and the people named after the martyr. This holiday is still one of the biggest holidays dedicated especially to the students, but the point of this day is to understand and absorb the great life of Marty Tatianna and all she did in the past.
